Beginning Your Journey with MindPsych Clinic

Taking the First Step

Beginning psychological therapy or seeking an assessment can sometimes feel overwhelming, particularly when you're unsure what to expect. At MindPsych Clinic, we aim to make the process of accessing psychological services as straightforward and comfortable as possible.

Whether you're seeking support for emotional or psychological difficulties, or looking for greater clarity through a psychological or neurodevelopmental assessment, we recognise that taking the first step is an important decision.

The following information is designed to help you understand how to get started, prepare for your appointment and know what to expect when accessing our services.

How to book psychology sessions

Getting Started

Step 1 — Contact MindPsych Clinic

Getting started is simple. Contact MindPsych Clinic by phone or email to enquire about availability and arrange your initial appointment. Our administration team will guide you through the booking process and answer any questions you may have.

Step 2 — Arrange a GP Referral (If Claiming Medicare)

If you would like to access Medicare rebates for your psychology sessions, you will generally need a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from your GP.

When booking your GP appointment, request a longer consultation and let the receptionist know that you would like to discuss a Mental Health Treatment Plan. You can ask your GP to address the referral to:  Melissa Yerbury — MindPsych Clinic

Eligible clients may access Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual psychology sessions per calendar year, subject to referral requirements. A GP referral is not required if you prefer to attend as a private-paying client.

Step 3 — Complete Your Intake Forms

Before your first appointment, our administration team will email you a brief intake questionnaire, consent forms and a service agreement.

These documents help us understand your needs and provide important information about confidentiality, fees and the therapeutic process. You will also be invited to securely provide your payment details prior to your appointment.

Step 4 — Attend Your First Appointment

Your appointment will take place via secure telehealth. Prior to your session, you will receive information about accessing your online appointment. Find a quiet, private and comfortable space where you can speak openly without interruptions.

Your first session provides an opportunity to discuss your concerns, relevant background experiences and what you hope to achieve through therapy. Together, we will begin developing an understanding of your needs and a plan for moving forward.

Getting Started with Psychological Assessments

Step 1 — Contact MindPsych Clinic

Contact MindPsych Clinic by phone or email to discuss your assessment needs and arrange an initial consultation. Our administration team will send you a brief intake questionnaire and relevant consent forms to complete prior to your appointment.

Step 2 — Initial Consultation and Assessment Quote

An initial consultation will be arranged to discuss your concerns, relevant background information and the specific questions you would like the assessment to address. Payment for this consultation is required upfront. This appointment provides an opportunity to determine whether a comprehensive assessment is clinically appropriate and likely to provide meaningful information. In some cases, there may be insufficient evidence or clinical justification to proceed with further assessment. Where this occurs, we will discuss the findings and provide guidance regarding appropriate next steps.

If assessment is recommended, an individualised assessment plan will be developed, and you will receive a written quote outlining the proposed assessment and associated costs.

You can then decide whether you wish to proceed. There is no obligation to continue with the assessment after receiving your quote.

Step 3 — Assessment and Questionnaires

Once you have accepted the quote and paid the required deposit, your face-to-face assessment sessions will be scheduled. Depending on the assessment, you may be asked to complete a range of online questionnaires and standardised measures. For children and adolescents, additional questionnaires may also be provided to parents, teachers and, where age-appropriate, the young person themselves.

Assessment sessions may involve clinical interviews, cognitive testing using standardised assessment tools, and other activities designed to explore relevant areas of functioning.

Step 4 — Report and Feedback Session

Once all assessment information has been collected, the results will be carefully reviewed and integrated into a comprehensive psychological assessment report.

The report will outline the assessment findings, relevant diagnostic considerations where appropriate, and individualised recommendations.

A feedback session will then be arranged to discuss the findings, explain the recommendations and provide an opportunity to ask questions. The feedback session is included in the overall assessment fee.

Assessment Fees and Rebates

At MindPsych Clinic, we recognise that every individual has different assessment needs. For this reason, we do not offer a fixed price list for psychological, cognitive or neurodevelopmental assessments. Each assessment is individually planned according to the person's presentation, referral question and the assessment measures required.

We are happy to provide an approximate indication of costs during your initial enquiry. However, a formal quote will be provided following the initial consultation, once your assessment requirements have been established.

Comprehensive psychological and cognitive assessments are generally privately funded and are not covered by Medicare rebates under a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Some specific Medicare assessment pathways may be available depending on eligibility and referral arrangements.
